A couple hours later, the men found themselves on a wagon train coming out of the nearby mountains, winding their way down to the little town below.
A wolf charged out of the underbrush, snarling, heading straight toward the lead mule pulling the cart in front.
Pow!
The animal stumbled and fell before it came too close.
âMy name is Wolf,â the Commander said, his six-shooter smoking. âI kill wolves.â
âYouâre a better shot when youâre sober,â Callahan muttered from the rear of the train, nine wagons away.
âWeâll probably have to deal with at least one group of bandits,â Ted said, from the third cart in line.
His brother, in the sixth cart, nodded in agreement.
The vehicles were not very big. They looked smaller than an autocab. But each carried chunks of heavy gold ore.
The little mules struggled to roll them forward, and on steep inclines the miners kept a hand on the brakes to maintain control.
The miners, one driver per cart, were armed with basic rifles. Between them, the party had 13 guns. It seemed decently protected, as far as Wolf could tell.
âWeâre drawing close to our destination,â the lead driver shouted as they approached a final curve.
âGood spot for an ambush!â Callahan yelled from the rear.
âI better reload my peashooter,â Wolf said, reaching for an ammo box.
Moments later they rounded a bend, trees and brush on either side of the road.
BapBapBap! BapBap!
Energy bolts rained out from the trees, peppering the lead cart. The driver went down.
Wolf dove down in the cart as bolts sailed overhead and bounced off the sides.
BapBapBapBap!
The other drivers and the Hoang brothers returned fire, strafing the trees with gunshots. But the bandits had superior weapons and the advantage of cover.
BapBap! Bap!
Wolf peeked over the edge of his cart and saw one of the bandits emerge from behind a tree.
He squinted and aimed his six-shooter.
Pow!
The man went down.
The shot attracted attention, though, and several hidden guns turned on his cart.
BapBapBapBapBap!
Ted Hoang took the opportunity to stand up and shoot back, drawing the fire back to the middle of the train. He went down in a flurry of bolts.
Trent roared in rage and jumped out of his own wagon. He charged the ambush, shooting on the run.
Pow! Pow!
Gunfire from the trees concentrated on him for a moment, bringing him down.
BapBapBap! BapBap!
Wolf peeked out again and sniped two more gunmen, drawing attention back to the front of the line. He ducked back down in the cart as bolts sailed overhead and bounced off the sides again.
At last the gunfire tapered off. No more shots came from the wagon train. No more came from the trees.
Wolf heard someone say, âCheck for survivors.â
Feet rustled through leaves and grass as the bandits came out of hiding.
Wolf quietly reloaded his gun with the last of the ammo.
âHope thereâs no more than six of âem,â he muttered to himself.
He grabbed a chunk of gold from the cart the size of his fist, and tossed it out.
It clanged against the side of another cart in the middle.
BapBapBap! Bap!
Wolf stood up and squeezed off shots, as fast as he could.
